Mind a miracle or madness?
This is a one among the many blog posts about the mind. In the previous blog we embarked on a journey to explore "Mind Matters". Links to previous topics are given at the end of the blog. Readers are encouraged to go through the previous blogs.
What is mind ?
At the outset even an attempt to define what the word "mind" represents an envious adventure. For the purpose of the blog and for the time being let us limit the definition of the mind as an vital organ in the body that performs a set of predefined tasks.
What pre defined tasks?
The mind is tasked with receiving input from other physical organs like eyes, ears, nose, skin and tongue perform a series of action on the information received and stores it. For now lets not go into how this takes place in the human body.
Broadly the three stage activity of reception, processing and storage of information, are functions of the mind about which we are focused upon in this blog.
Reception - Mind as a receptor
The brain is one of the vital physical organs in the human body, through electrical impulses it interacts with all other parts of the human body. What we see, hear, smell, touch and taste are inputs received by the brain from the eyes, ears, nose, skin and tongue respectively.
These are the major five mediums through with we interact with our mind on a day today basis both internally and with the external word. Through any one or a combination of any one of the five mediums, the human mind can be influenced.
The stage at which mind acts as a receptor is the stage at which it can be influenced easily. Huge amounts of money and effort have been invested, in extensive research, on how to influence the mind using the five mediums. Lets leave the motives of the researchers and sponsors aside whatever the motive maybe
This constant exposure and targeting of the five mediums in order to influence the mind has created many avoidable mental issues. Mental illness is a silent pandemic set to increase as time goes by. Any approach to mental wellbeing excluding any of the five mediums is not a wholistic approach to mental health.
Handling the inputs - Mind as a processor
The electrical signals from the five mediums received by the mind are processed and stored as memory in the human body. The mind ensures that this storage is done aptly in a segregated way and the electrical signals are not mixed up.
Storing information as memory - Mind as a storage medium
The mind after receiving inputs and processing them now moves on to storing the information. This information is stored across the body right from the brain to the muscles in the body as memory.
The underlying basis of any human experience is entirely an outcome of this stored memory. I will stress this statement once again, the underlying basis of any human experience is entirely an outcome of this stored memory.
